The projects that will be funded by Proposition D, if passed, are what ultimately pushed Kalie to run for city council. For many months, Kalie, council candidate John Barnes, council candidate Dr. John Bertini, and many concerned neighbors have publicly advocated for a bond election to allow West U residents the right to vote on all aspects of the Facilities Master Plan. Dozens of public comments and hundreds of petition signatures recently convinced a very resistant council to allow us to vote on just $15.07M of over $76M in planned projects (that is IF cost estimates made years in advance are accurate).
VOTE NO ON PROPOSITION A:
This proposition will amend our city charter to allow council to meet only once a month! Our city needs more opportunities for residents to speak to, and hear from, its leaders, not fewer!
Say NO to less governmental oversight from residents.
VOTE NO ON PROPOSITION D:
West U facilities must be maintained, and updated, but the current plan is destructive, crushes our city with debt, completely disregards sustainability, devalues local culture, and destroys the tranquility and quality of life that have long existed in our historic city. If residents approve this bond for Phase II of the current Facilities Master Plan, then the current council is committed to taking on addition debt in the form of Certificates of Obligation to fund the remainder of their plan. Certificates of Obligation do not require voter approval. In fact, council justified their ordering of a bond election on only this small portion of their plan by claiming that the projects funded by Proposition D must be completed to enable any of the others, including fire station updates. An alternative plan, which includes renovating these buildings in place, is sustainable and financially sound.
Say NO to tons of debt, increased taxes, the unnecessary demolition of functional buildings, many years of noise and air pollution, and erasure of our city's special history.
